Sennheiser Momentum 2 Wireless Review

Encouraged by the great success of the Momentum headphones, Sennheiser began designing the second generation, and for our review, we selected the largest model on offer – the Momentum II over-ear.

The new Sennheiser MOMENTUM Wireless lets you experience crystal clear MOMENTUM sound without being attached to a cable. These high-resolution headphones set the benchmark for performance, style, and comfort in the wireless headphone category. Bluetooth technology is integrated with engineering expertise to ensure the MOMENTUM signature sound remains intact. Near Field Communication (NFC) is provided for effortless “at a touch” Bluetooth pairing with any NFC enabled device. Further enhancing the audio experience is Noise Gard hybrid active noise cancellation that virtually eliminates unwanted ambient sound. Your voice will sound crystal clear during phone calls thanks to Voice Max; dual built-in microphones that dynamically cancel out external interference for perfect speech intelligibility. MOMENTUM Wireless features an iconic design using premium materials like stainless steel and real leather. New, slightly larger ear cups using ergonomically designed, memory foam cushions provide extreme comfort for long listening sessions. The stainless steel headband is now foldable for easy and compact storage in the supplied premium carry case. You can enjoy MOMENTUM Wireless everywhere!

The difference from the first generation is noticeable already in the packaging, as previous Momentum headphones came in a fairly large, rigid shipping box, with extra little space and excellent content protection. Instead, there is now a much smaller bag, softer sides, and an extra bag for packing headphones. The reason for this is simple: unlike the first generation, the Momentum II over-ear can be folded to take up less space when transported. While this is more practical, we would still prefer a hard and durable box as the headphones of this price range deserve it. In addition to the bag and bag, a simple quick printed guide comes with the headphones and the box is of high quality.

As mentioned earlier, the Momentum II over-ear can be folded, but this in no way interferes with their design. The hinges are located on the inside of the headband and cannot be seen during use, making Momentum II difficult to distinguish from the first generation. The overall look, which is fully retained, contributes to this – the bracket is made of stainless steel with a premium finish and the upper part is split into two parallel strips and lined with leather with prominent yellow studs. The resonators have an elliptical shape and are relatively shallow, while the pads are quite richly upholstered but smaller than on average over-ear headphones. As the Momentum II is a closed-type of the headphones, there is no opening or any other application on the resonators, and the manufacturer’s logo is placed at the junction of the resonator and the headband, which also serves to adjust the volume.

When it comes to technical characteristics, Sennheiser does not specify the dimensions of the speaker units, but according to the category of headphones, it can be assumed that the drivers are between four and five inches in diameter. On the other hand, the units are known to use neodymium magnets, as well as the frequency range ranges from 16 hertz to 22 kilohertz, and the impedance is 18 ohms.

Sennheiser Momentum 2 Sound Test

During use, we first notice the pronounced wearing comfort, which made the first generation famous. The pads on the resonators are slightly smaller in diameter, but sufficient to enclose the ear shell, and the thin padding makes the wearer completely forget about the mount on the head. Powered by a Musical Fidelity V90-HPA amplifier, which also took on the role of D/A converter, Momentum II over-ear provided us with comprehensive and well-balanced playback. The treble is very clean, with a clear presentation of the finest details and spatial positioning that gives the scene great latitude. In addition, it impresses on the headphones’ ability to present refined and gentle tones in this range with equal conviction and ease, as well as sharp, rippling sounds. Even during complex sections with many instruments, the sparkling treble stands out and remains perfectly audible throughout. The mid-tone range complements the treble perfectly, with equally good spaciousness and clear display. Although it does not lag behind the high and low spectrum in its intensity and presence in music, the midrange is characterized by a slightly dry sound. Therefore, lovers of rich and prominent mid-tones who take on the whole music experience can be deprived – these headphones are presented fairly faithfully and without beautification, and in this sense they reminded us of the Scandinavian sound school. The lowest range is really impressive, but not in that cheap, noisy way. Momentum II expresses the presence of bass in the right way, so the bass features a powerful punch and flawless definition to the very bottom. Timing is optimal, speed and dynamics are great, and the grain of heat is only there to refine the lower range.

Although the Momentum II is an over-ear type of headphones, its slightly smaller dimensions and folding capability make it acceptable for use on the go. In addition, the cable has a remote control with an integrated microphone to control playback, volume, and phone calls. It is worth mentioning here the possibility of disconnecting the factory cable with the remote, which on the other hand has a 2.5mm connector with a simple locking mechanism. So, a factory-made cable can be used on the go, and for home use, it can be replaced with some better quality, without the presence of remote control. The relatively forgiving nature of these headphones, which, even with MP3 from the phone, sounds quite acceptable, which is not always the case in this class, also supports the use on the go. Lastly, the only complaint is the lack of a rigid shipping box and a 6.35mm adapter.

Conclusion

Although folding resonators and microphones are not often encountered in the category of over-ear headphones, this is only a confirmation that Sennheiser wanted to reconcile two niches with this model – mobile and hi-fi headphones. In terms of design and build quality, Sennheiser went for safety, so the new model gets the highest marks in these segments too – we believe that the look of these headphones will never be outdated, and the materials and finishes used are truly top-notch. With equally good sound, it’s up to you to decide whether to use them at home, on the go, or on all occasions.
